Hair And Phobias - Taking care of your hair is, for most people, a pleasant situation. For others, fortunately very few, hair evoke specific phobias related to very complex psychological dynamics. In Italy, the tricofobia, fear of hair, and tomofobia, fear of the cuts (especially surgical), phobias are two real and recognized by specialists as part of the vast arsenal of fears that attacks in an increasingly intense large number of people in the world. However, there is also a very special and fear that specifically relates to the hair. It is the anxiety that assails those who are subjected to cutting hair, defined in the United States, by the term "tonsurephobia".

The phobia is the fear of an object or situation, so excessive that it becomes an obsession that can lead to uncontrollable anxiety and the cancellation of the person who suffers.

To diagnose phobias, U.S. physicians and psychologists refer to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which lists the symptoms and diagnosis of all mental diseases recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. The symptoms that determine a positive diagnosis are:

1. Intense and persistent fear of an object or a situation defined.
2. Disruption of normal activities at home, at school, at work and in relationships interpersonal, because of the anxiety experienced.
3. Immediate manifestation of anxiety in the presence of the object in question. This fear can lead in some cases actual panic attacks.

What causes the fear to cut his hair?

Difficult to explain why this phobia persists even when it leads to unpleasant consequences. Sufferers of this fear, in fact, experiments often embarrassing situations due to the length of the hair.

In some cases, it is a fear connected to the hairdresser's first experience in childhood.
